Facebook ad retargeting

Retargeting on desktops is relatively easy because of “cookies” — small text files that log when a certain user visits a certain site. Cookies are essentially irrelevant on the mobile Web, however. Cookies work Google’s Chrome app for iPhones or Chrome on Android, Google’s mobile operating system, according to Are Traasdahl, CEO of cross-device tracking firm Tapad. But cookies don’t work on the countless other apps consumers use. This makes it difficult to track a consumer’s activity both within and across given devices. And given the mind-boggling and ever-growing number of mobile devices, platforms, publishers and mobile operating systems, the problem is only becoming more complex.

Facebook retargeting lets advertisers position ads to warm audiences. This is highly valuable because warm audiences are closer to buying, as they have already shown an interest in your products or services. When a site visitor peruses your website but takes no actions on it, you can surmise that the user was likely early in the decision-making process and not ready to take action. This indicates that additional sales fostering is required.

The Facebook Pixel, also known informally as the Facebook retargeting pixel, is a snippet of code you can insert into the back end of your website. Like other tags, it helps drive and decode key performance metrics generated by a particular platform. Specifically, the Facebook Pixel helps businesses with a Facebook page determine and improve the ROI from the world’s biggest social network. Here’s how…
Here’s the truth: 96% of visitors that land on your website are not ready to buy. They come to your site, wander around for a while, then leave. The worst part? Most of them probably forget about your website as soon as they close the tab. So, how do you remind your website visitors about your ecommerce store and keep in touch with them until they’re ready to become your customers? That’s right—you use Facebook retargeting ads.
To track the actions you need to integrate them within the pixel base code. For example, an ecommerce site that wants to track purchases will have to enter a code in the thank-you or final confirmation page that is loaded immediately after a successful purchase (see the example in the next image) in the thank you page (the final confirmation page).
The Facebook pixel is a piece of code placed on your website that allows you to measure the results of your ads, optimize campaigns to help get the most actions you care about at the cheapest cost, and build audiences that can be used for improved ad targeting. Through this course, we'll look at how the pixel functions to help you reach audiences that matter most to you. We'll go through how to create and install the pixel, how to use it to understand the actions people take on your website and create custom audiences.
Many publishers are doing cool things with retargeting, but we want to call out Facebook’s official launch of Custom Audiences from Your Website as a real game-changer. By simply appending Facebook’s tracking pixel, any marketer can now segment website visitors into target audiences and re-engage them with highly targeted messages across the world’s largest social network. Even better, Custom Audiences from Your Website actually extends beyond desktop, making it the first true cross-device retargeting solution.

A computer sales and repair store is running a promotion on external hard drives and they want to use Facebook to advertise this sale. To avoid wasting ad spend, they target ads by user’s needs. Using the info from the Facebook Pixel, they create a custom audience of those who have recently visited the blog post on how to back up a computer. They then create an ad specific to those users, explaining the benefits of external hard drives and the current promotion.
Group 1: People who click through to your post-click landing page but don’t progress to the sales page. These people will click on your ad, evaluate your post-click landing page, and decide they’re not ready to buy. The Facebook Pixel on that page will add them to an audience that you can target with a tailored Facebook ad that attempts to draw them back to that post-click landing page.

What stands true, though, is that after a week of retargeting, you may want to stop focusing on immediate purchases and aim for longer-term relationships with your website’s visitors. That is, you should try to keep in touch with your potential customers until they’re ready to convert instead of trying to convince them to convert and then giving up when they don’t.
The Facebook pixel is a small snippet of code that you, your website engineer or a Facebook Marketing Partner can paste in your code. It tracks the people and the types of actions they take when they engage with your brand, including any of your Facebook ads they saw before going to your website, the pages of your site they visit and the items they add to their carts.

When I first decided to learn retargeting, I realized there was almost nothing out there to help. There were some courses, but it was really hard to get a holistic understanding of retargeting from those courses. And there were few videos on YouTube that didn't provide all the details I need to actually run retargeting campaigns across different channels. I noticed a lot of the info was hard to apply in real life. There were some really cool case studies but they weren't actionable or applicable. I thought that there had to be a better way, so i created this course so everyone could know how to use successful, high impact retargeting ads in all of their customer interactions.
4. Force Majeure. Neither party shall be in default or otherwise liable for any delay in or failure of its performance under this Agreement if such delay or failure arises by any reasons beyond its reasonable control, including any act of God, any acts of the common enemy, the elements, earthquakes, floods, fires, epidemics, riots, failures or delay in transportation or communications or utilities, or any act or failure to act by the other party or such other party’s officers, employees, agents or contractors; provided, however, that lack of funds shall not be deemed to be a reason beyond a party’s reasonable control.
By showing the same Facebook retargeting ads for weeks you risk boring and even annoying your visitors; it’s known as ad fatigue. As a result, people can start to actively hide or even block your ads. Facebook takes that as a sign of low-quality and irrelevant content and raises your cost of reaching people. On the other hand, by sending your visitors through an ever-changing campaign, they won’t get irritated at your Facebook retargeting efforts and you won’t overpay for your Facebook retargeting campaigns.
The beauty of retargeting ads is that they can be run on a continuous loop. You’ll have new people finding your site and abandoning their cart every day, but when you use the Pixel, you don’t have to update your Custom Audiences manually. They’ll simply filter their way into your existing retargeting audience — and therefore, see your retargeting campaign.
For example, through Google Analytics, a restaurant discovered that a large percent of users who clicked on their lunch ad ended up using their online reservation system to make dinner reservations. They had not expected to get dinner reservations from those searching for lunch spots, but, given this, they designed better website flows between web pages, leading to more reservations, and they also started offering lunch reservations.

Many say that the inability to track consumers across devices is what’s preventing brands from spending heavily on mobile advertising. If publishers and platforms can prove that a smartphone resulted in a later purchase on a desktop, then brands will be more willing to spend on mobile, the thinking goes. Tracking consumers across devices is also integral to understanding how consumer behavior differs on mobile versus desktops. The prevailing wisdom is that these devices fall in different places along the purchase funnel, but exactly where remains unclear.

Every business has a number of different customers, but there is still an ideal customer. Your ideal customers are those who fit your product or service best and, in return, are the most likely to convert and become a customer of yours. They are the ones who require the least sales because they’re the ones the most likely to buy. Take the time to consider and precisely define who these people are by learning How to Create Customer Profiles.
A bar hosts a weekly Ladies Night and they are looking to increase attendance for tomorrow night. They segment ads by location, age, and gender. First, they hyper-focus location to show ads only to those within a 10-mile radius of their bar. Second, the majority of their best customers are 24 to 35, so they target ads to users in that age range. Lastly, they know men and women look for different things in a night out, so they create two ads geared towards each.

For example, a ski and bike company should group users by the main product types the business offers, such as skiers, snowboarders, mountain bikers, and road cyclists. A customer who previously purchased a road bike would be a good candidate for a promotion on new clipless road bike pedals, whereas the customer who rented a mountain bike won’t likely be interested in road biking gear.
Facebook retargeting may be geared towards capturing those who have already visited your site, but this doesn’t mean you can’t still use the retargeting information to build brand awareness by reaching those who haven’t yet heard of you. Advertisers can create “lookalike” audiences based on the data from the Facebook Pixel to create ads geared towards new customers who match the profile of present customers.

A local bakery is using the Facebook Pixel to track user behavior on their website. They find that the majority of users go to one of three pages from their homepage: their menu, catering services, or wedding cakes. Their goal is to increase their sale of custom wedding cakes, so they create Facebook ads focused on their custom cakes targeted to users who spent at least two minutes on their wedding cakes webpage, rather than showing a generic bakery ad.
